Richard Gadd discusses transformative role in BBC drama Half Man following Baby Reindeer success

Richard Gadd stars as Ruben in the six-part BBC series Half Man, which he also wrote. The drama follows three decades in the lives of Niall and Ruben, exploring their fractured brotherhood. Niall struggles with his sexuality while Ruben grapples with past trauma. Gadd describes the role as terrifying and a big challenge, requiring physical transformation including growing a beard and building muscle. He initially didn't see himself acting after his intense experience with the Emmy-winning Baby Reindeer. Jamie Bell plays Niall, with Gadd praising him as brilliant and underrated. The series cuts between the 1980s and present day, starting with a violent altercation at Niall's wedding. Set in Glasgow, the show examines family dysfunction and repression. Gadd notes Glasgow's transformation into a progressive cultural capital with a prominent gay community. Young versions of the characters are played by Stuart Campbell and Mitchell Robertson. Marianne McIvor portrays Ruben's mother Maura, while Neve McIntosh plays Niall's mother Lori. Half Man premieres on BBC iPlayer weekly from Friday 24 April. Gadd wants audiences to interpret the ending for themselves.
