Richard Baquié's 'Déplacements' at Hôtel des Arts de Toulon
The exhibition 'Richard Baquié – Déplacements' at Hôtel des Arts de Toulon (March 4–May 7, 2017) brings together about thirty works centered on the theme of displacement. Baquié, who died prematurely in 1996 at age 44, created sculptures from assembled materials, often incorporating vehicles and travel motifs. Key works include 'L'Aventure' (1988), a BMW buried in a Marseille neighborhood with the word 'Désir' on its windshield; 'Autrefois il prenait le train pour travestir son inquiétude en lassitude' (1984), a train window transformed into a wind tunnel or camera; and a 1987 monumental cockpit of a Caravelle aircraft exhibited at Centre Pompidou. In 1991, the Fondation Cartier in Jouy-en-Josas held a retrospective titled 'Constats d'échec.' Baquié's practice also included photographic collages ('Intégrales,' 1991-1993) and a 1982 helium balloon event in his studio. The exhibition is free and open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am–6pm.
