Richard Aldrich's First Italian Solo Show at Fondazione Giuliani
Fondazione Giuliani in Rome hosts Richard Aldrich's first Italian solo exhibition, 'An exploration of how time only exists in half steps', until June 25, 2022. The American artist (born 1975 in Hampton, Virginia, based in Brooklyn) works across painting, photography, and installation, focusing on intermediate stages of the creative process. The show features 26 works arranged non-chronologically in raw, airy rooms, oscillating between abstraction and figuration. Pieces range from small to large format on felt or canvas, using oil, wax, acrylic, and charcoal, with surfaces cut, glued, and scraped. About a third of the works are from the last six to seven years; Aldrich keeps them for extended periods to observe them while working on other paintings. He emphasizes directness, honesty, and vulnerability. Found objects like a wooden hand, paper bag, and rusty suitcases appear alongside pop references such as Christmas lights and a miniature wrestling ring. The exhibition is curated by Adrienne Drake, director of Fondazione Giuliani.
