Riccardo Guarneri: From Informal to Light and Geometry

artist · 2026-05-05

The article profiles mid-career Italian artist Riccardo Guarneri (born Florence, 1933), tracing his evolution from informal painting to a rigorous geometric abstraction centered on light. In 1959, after a Grand Tour, he returned to Florence and participated in an informal painting exhibition at Fiamma Vigo's gallery alongside Claudio Verna, though he later disavowed that work. Influenced by Cy Twombly, as well as Dorazio and Novelli, Guarneri developed a distinctive vocabulary of faint signs, lines of light, and chromatic dissolution. He was a key member of the group Tempo 3 (1962–63), guided by critic Eugenio Battisti, alongside Giancarlo Bargoni, Attilio Carreri, Arnaldo Esposto, and Gianni Stirone. In 1966 he exhibited at the Kunsthalle Bern in "Weiss auf Weiss" with Fontana, Soto, Le Parc, Albert, Dorazio, and Bonalumi, and also participated in the Venice Biennale that year. During the 1970s he embraced analytical painting, and in the 1980s turned to watercolor. A recent exhibition at Galleria Michela Rizzo in Venice (until April 2) and another at Galleria Rosai Ugolini Modern in New York showcased his ongoing optical research. A monograph by Giovanna Uzzani, "Riccardo Guarneri. Contrappunto Luce," was published in 2004 for a show at Palazzo Pitti in Florence.
