RIBA Stirling Prize 2016 Shortlist Announced

award · 2026-05-05

The RIBA Stirling Prize 2016 shortlist features six projects, with a strong emphasis on educational architecture. Half of the nominees are school buildings, continuing a trend from last year's winner, Burntwood School by AHMM. The shortlist includes the Riverside Campus in Glasgow by Michael Laird and Reiach and Hall Architects, the Blavatnik School of Government by Herzog & de Meuron, and the Weston Library restoration by Wilkinson Eyre, both at Oxford University. From London's regeneration comes the Newport Street Gallery by Caruso St John, converting Victorian workshops into a gallery for Damien Hirst's collection, and Trafalgar Place by dRMM Architects, replacing 1970s social housing with private residences. The only private residence is the OutHouse by Loyn & Co Architects in Gloucestershire. After a 2015 absence of star architects, this year's list includes previous winners Wilkinson Eyre and international names like Herzog & de Meuron and Caruso St John. The winner receives £20,000 and will be announced on October 6.
