RIBA International Prize 2018 Shortlist Announced
The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has revealed the shortlist for its 2018 International Prize, awarded biennially to the building that best exemplifies architectural excellence combined with social impact. The jury is chaired by Elizabeth Diller, with members Joshua Bolchover, Kazuyo Sejima, Gloria Cabral, and Peter Clegg. From 20 projects across 16 countries, four finalists were selected: the Central European University campus in Budapest by O'Donnell + Tuomey; the Children Village boarding school in Canuanã, Brazil, by Aleph Zero + Rosenbaum; the Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokyo by Nikken Sekkei; and the Bosco Verticale residential towers in Milan by Boeri Studio. The winner will be announced on November 29, 2018. The Bosco Verticale, completed in 2014, features two towers of 80 and 112 meters planted with 17,000 trees, shrubs, and plants, promoting urban biodiversity. The Children Village, completed in January 2017, houses 540 children and is funded by the Bradesco Foundation. The Central European University project includes a 400-seat auditorium and a four-story library. The Toho Gakuen School of Music replaces a previous building with a brutalist concrete design incorporating acoustic wood panels.
