Rhizome board member Seth Stolbun resigns over New Museum leadership concerns

Seth Stolbun has resigned from Rhizome's board of directors, citing the digital arts organization's affiliation with the New Museum. His resignation letter, posted on Instagram, referenced a New York Times report published last month that detailed allegations of a toxic work environment at the New Museum. The article by Robin Pogrebin included claims from more than 30 current and former employees about verbal harassment, abuse, sexual comments, unsafe workplace practices, and lack of financial transparency. One former employee criticized director Lisa Phillips for running the institution as a 'private fiefdom' with control over all oversight including the board. Stolbun stated he could not continue his relationship with Rhizome due to its connection with the New Museum, noting that after conversations with Rhizome's Executive Director and Board chair Greg Pass, he received no information contradicting the Times report. He joined the board in 2018 and expressed sadness over his departure but emphasized holding organizations to high standards. In response, Pass acknowledged Stolbun's service and affirmed Rhizome's valued 17-year partnership with the New Museum, highlighting their shared goal of advancing born-digital art and culture.
