Rhizome and Hyundai Partner for Digital Art Exhibition World on a Wire

digital · 2026-04-27

The US-based cultural association Rhizome, founded in 1996 in New York and affiliated with the New Museum since 2003, has signed a major agreement with Hyundai Motor to organize events dedicated to digital art between 2021 and 2022. The partnership aims to promote and exhibit artistic projects using digital technologies. The program kicks off with a large group exhibition titled World on a Wire, opening January 28 in Beijing at Hyundai Motorstudio and simultaneously online. The exhibition will travel to Hyundai venues in Moscow (April–July) and Seoul (May–August). It focuses on augmented reality, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence, featuring synthetic life forms and exploring the potentials and poetics of computer simulation. The title is borrowed from Rainer Werner Fassbinder's 1973 cult TV film The World on a Wire, a dystopian narrative about simulation technologies. Hyundai, which has previously collaborated with Tate Modern and LACMA, strengthens its commitment to technological experimentation. Wonhong Cho, Executive Vice President and Head of Customer Experience Division at Hyundai Motor, stated that the partnership reflects Hyundai's guiding principle 'Progress for Humanity' and aims to inspire people passionate about creative arts. The exhibition is curated by Rhizome's team.
