Reza Derakshani's New Paintings at Leila Heller Gallery

exhibition · 2026-04-22

The Leila Heller Gallery showcases a collection of new and previously unseen artworks by Iranian-American artist Reza Derakshani in the exhibition titled “Night Conveys the Light, Every Day & Every Night,” which runs from March 7th to September 7th, 2022. Through a vibrant iconography influenced by medieval Persian poetry, classical literature, miniature painting, and sacred architecture, Derakshani revives forgotten stories and symbols of Iran's cultural legacy. This series is part of his Day and Night and Fig Tree collections, reflecting contrasting themes and a duality of experiences. Born in 1952 in Sangsar, Iran, he studied at Pasadena School of Art, taught at the University of Tehran, and relocated to Italy and then New York in 1986. His artworks are included in prestigious collections such as the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Additionally, he has performed as a musician at venues like the Brooklyn Museum and the Montreux Jazz Festival. Currently, he divides his time between studios in St Petersburg, Russia; Texas, USA; and Istanbul, Turkey.
