Reversos at the Prado: The Hidden Backs of Masterpieces

The Museo del Prado in Madrid is hosting 'Reversos', an exhibition organized by Miguel Ángel Blanco, which runs until March 3, 2023. This unique display reveals the concealed backs of more than a hundred artworks, offering an immersive experience where visitors can view seals, labels, and sketches usually reserved for conservators. The idea was inspired by a seven-year examination of Velázquez's 'Las Meninas'. Notable pieces include Van Gogh's 'Self-Portrait as a Painter', Magritte's 'The Empty Mask', and works from Rembrandt, Titian, and Goya. The exhibition features a 15th-century panel by Fra Angelico as the oldest piece and three book-boxes by Blanco from 2020 as the newest, along with a trompe l'oeil by Boilly and a Stieglitz photograph of O'Keeffe.
