Return of the 'Anime Pezzentelle' in Naples

After the passing of a Roman collector, restorer Diego Pistone acquired over a hundred miniature sculptures sourced from Neapolitan alleyways. The collection was later obtained by Opera Pia Purgatorio ad Arco Onlus, under the direction of Giuseppe D'Acunto, and is currently showcased at the Museo dell'Opera della chiesa and the Oratorio dell'Immacolata. Curated by Nicola Ciancio, the exhibition highlights distinctive sculptures on 'scoglio' bases and features Gualtiero Peirce's video narrative 'Vi aspettiamo per il rinfresco.' The 'anime pezzentelle' cult includes prayers for departed souls. These 19th- and 20th-century statuettes were gathered from votive shrines, including works by Gregorio Maria Rocco. The Church of Santa Maria delle Anime del Purgatorio ad Arco, founded in 1616, contains important artworks and relics. The exhibition catalog is compiled by Francesca Amirante.
