Rethinking Nature at Madre Napoli: Colonialism, Ecology, and Indigenous Resistance
The 'Rethinking Nature' exhibition at the Madre museum in Naples, curated by Kathryn Weir and Ilaria Conti, showcases over fifty artworks that delve into themes of colonialism, migration, ecological degradation, and indigenous resistance. A significant focus is on the conflict inherent in human life and the notion of an irreversible point. Highlighted is Elizabeth Povinelli's 80-minute video, 'The Inheritance' (2021), which chronicles her family's journey from Corisolo to Buffalo and Louisiana. The Karrabing Film Collective's 'The Mermaids or Aiden in Wonderland' (2018) illustrates a world tainted by fracking. Additional pieces include 'Soot Breath / Corpus Infinitum' (2021) by Denise Ferreira da Silva and Arjuna Neuman, 'Black Eldorado (We are the earthquake)' (2021) by Jota Mombaça and Iki Yos Piña Narváez, and Ana Mendieta's 'Silueta de Arena' (1974-81). The exhibition is ongoing at Madre Napoli and includes seminars. Reviewer Maria Pia Masella critiques the complexity of the curatorial strategy.
