Restored Vittoriano Frieze Unveiled in Rome Exhibition on Angelo Zanelli
In late April 2023, a restoration initiative commenced for the Altare della Patria in Rome. The marble frieze created by Angelo Zanelli (Brescia, 1870 – Rome, 1942) has been completely restored and is now featured in the exhibition titled "La Dea Roma e l'Altare della Patria. Angelo Zanelli e l'invenzione dei simboli dell'Italia unita" at Sala Zanardelli, curated by Professor Valerio Terraroli. This exhibition showcases 44 plaster casts from the Gipsoteca del Vittoriano, associated with Zanelli's frieze and the sketches from the 1908 competition. Terraroli emphasizes the evolution of Zanelli's style. Edith Gabrielli, the director of the Vittoriano, mentions that this is VIVE's second focused exhibition, designed to deepen the appreciation of Zanelli and his peers.
