Restored Velvet Underground Footage from 1969 Protest Surfaces

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-29

Jack Amadon, an archivist, has meticulously restored and merged rare recordings of The Velvet Underground’s performances at the Dallas Peace Moratorium on October 15, 1969, and the End of Cole Ave. Club on October 19, 1969. This footage originates from two distinct sources: a silent 30-second 8mm home movie captured by amateur filmmaker John Tincher, and a 16mm documentary created by Stoney Burns, editor of Dallas Notes. Amadon synchronized the audio from the club performance with the protest visuals using Adobe Premiere’s rate stretch and frame blending features, followed by restoration in DaVinci Resolve, where he added film grain for authenticity. Discovered in 2019 at SMU's G. William Jones Film and Video Collection, the restored video has garnered nearly 700,000 views on YouTube. The Velvet Underground, once managed by Andy Warhol, is now recognized as one of the most impactful rock bands of the 20th century.
