Restored Renaissance masterpieces from earthquake-hit Marche region on show in Rome

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Three years after the devastating earthquake that struck central Italy, the traveling exhibition 'Rinascimento Marchigiano' brings restored artworks from damaged churches in the Marche region to Rome. Curated by Stefano Papetti and Pierluigi Moriconi, the show previously appeared at Forte Malatesta in Ascoli Piceno and will travel to Senigallia in summer. Supported by ANCI Marche, Pio Sodalizio dei Piceni, the Soprintendenza Archeologica, Belle Arti e Paesaggio delle Marche, and the regional government, the exhibition features works spanning the 15th to 18th centuries. Highlights include pieces by Giovanni Serodine, Giovanni Baglione, Vittore Crivelli, Jacobello del Fiore, Vincenzo Pagani, Parrocel Étienne, and Cola dell'Amatrice, as well as anonymous wooden crucifixes, vesperbild sculptures, and early 16th-century frescoes. Restorations were carried out by local technicians in collaboration with the University of Camerino, the University of Urbino, and the Soprintendenza. Co-curator Pierluigi Moroni stated that after the tour, works unable to return to their original sites due to collapse or ongoing restoration will be placed in eight public storage facilities. Diagnostic investigations have also provided new insights into conservation and attribution, opening avenues for further research.
