Restored 17th-century Loggia dei Vini at Villa Borghese reopens with contemporary art program Lavinia

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

The Loggia dei Vini, a stunning oval pavilion built between 1609 and 1618 under Pope Paul V Borghese and architect Flaminio Ponzio at Villa Borghese in Rome, has just seen major restoration work, funded by Ghella. The first phase wrapped up in October 2024, focusing on fixing water-damaged sections like the internal vault, central fresco, and pillars, all supervised by the Soprintendenza Capitolina. It’s set to reopen on October 18, 2024, with a contemporary art project called Lavinia, curated by Salvatore Lacagnina. This program, named after Lavinia Fontana, features art inspired by ice cream flavors, honoring the Loggia's history as an early sorbet spot. The first flavor, 'Arancia e erba cedrina,' includes works from various artists, while a gelateria and restaurant will craft the flavors. Restoration will continue over the next few years in three phases.
