Restoration of Venice's Basilica della Salute Completed After Three Years
After three years of restoration, the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute in Venice has been unveiled, with 12,000 square meters of scaffolding removed. The project, supported by the Seminario, Ministry of Culture, and the Municipality of Venice, began in 2021 and concludes on November 21, 2024, coinciding with the Marian solemnity and the anniversary of the basilica's original completion in November 1687. Designed by architect Baldassarre Longhena, inspired by Andrea Palladio, the basilica is a masterpiece of Venetian Baroque architecture. It was built as an ex-voto to the Virgin Mary for the city's deliverance from the plague of 1630–1631, which decimated the population. The cult of the Madonna della Salute became so ingrained that the Virgin was added to the list of Venice's patron saints. The restoration also returns the ancient library to public use. Tourism councilor Simone Venturini stated that the basilica's restored splendor represents a return to the city's origins. Patriarch of Venice Francesco Moraglia emphasized the shared artistic heritage between state and church, noting that 80% of Europe's cultural patrimony was created by religions. The feast of the Madonna della Salute, celebrated on November 21, involves Venetians crossing a bridge from San Marco to the basilica to pray, making it one of the city's most popular festivals alongside the Festa del Redentore.
