Restoration of Alberto Burri's 'Nero con punti' at CUBO Bologna
The exhibition 'Alberto Burri Reloaded' at CUBO in Bologna, curated by Ilaria Bignotti, runs until January 21, 2023. Central to the show is the restored work 'Nero con punti' (1958) by Alberto Burri (Città di Castello, 1915 – Nice, 1995), part of his Sacchi series. The restoration, commissioned by Unipol, was led by Muriel Verat, who collaborated with CNR Florence and the University of Pisa over two years. Verat used Funori algae, a traditional Japanese material for paper consolidation, to gently reinforce the jute fibers without altering the natural aging process. The project included scientific analysis and aims to set a precedent for sustainable conservation of contemporary art. The exhibition also features four works on loan from Tornabuoni Arte, including pieces from the Catrami cycle (1950), 'Muffa' (1951), and an untitled work (1952). The restoration is documented through videos and educational materials.
