Restoration and guided tours continue at Naples' metro art stations
Established in 2001 under Achille Bonito Oliva's artistic direction, Naples' 'stazioni dell’arte' metro art circuit features over 250 unique installations from renowned artists such as Jannis Kounellis, Joseph Kosuth, and Anish Kapoor. Managed by the Municipality of Naples through its subsidiary ANM, the stations on Line 1 represent one of the most extensive public art projects globally. A conference on May 5, 2023, titled 'Le stazioni dell’arte di Napoli: conservazione, didattica, ricerca e Terza Missione,' led by Giovanna Cassese and Maria Corbi, discussed conservation initiatives by the Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli and ANM. The MAM (Museo Aperto Metropolitana Napoli) was created in 2018, receiving €200,000 annually for upkeep and an €800,000 investment from 2019 to 2023 for new technologies. Recent restorations at stations like Materdei and Salvator Rosa included works by Ettore Spalletti and Sol LeWitt. A mural by Michael Rovner at Municipio station is set for restoration. In May 2023, free guided tours at Materdei station, in partnership with Friends of Naples Onlus, showcase architecture by Atelier Mendini (2003) and artworks by various artists.
