Resi Girardello's Copper Wire Insect Sculptures Invade Venetian Historic Sites

exhibition · 2026-04-26

Resi Girardello, an artist from Vicenza, presents her latest crocheted copper wire sculptures at Casa Goldoni and Palazzo Mocenigo in Venice. The works depict insects such as potato beetles, beetles, and grasshoppers, which appear to invade the historic settings associated with Carlo Goldoni, the father of Venetian comedy. Curator Chiara Squarcina invited Girardello to participate in the latest edition of the Biennale dedicated to Burano lace, organized by the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia. Girardello has spent the last decade elevating the traditional feminine craft of crochet into sculpture. Her insect motifs, which she sees as symbols of an ecological, surrealist, and insectivorous imagination, are placed on tables and inside furniture in rooms where Goldoni lived and wrote. The exhibition concludes with a tribute to Mother Earth titled "GAIA OmniaMundaMundis," a large igloo-shaped dress made of copper wire, originally created for the Costa Crociere flagship Fascinosa, a contemporary art museum ship.
