Research Warns of AI-Induced Cognitive Surrender, Proposes Scaffolded Friction
A new study suggests that the increasing use of generative AI is turning what used to be harmless cognitive shortcuts into a real danger for our mental independence. This leads to quick conclusions and a strong reliance on automation, weakening our authority over knowledge. To investigate this decline, researchers analyzed 1,223 high-confidence AI-HCI papers from 2023 to early 2026. They found that support for human knowledge sovereignty dropped from 19.1% in 2025 to 13.1% in early 2026, while studies on optimizing autonomous machines rose to 19.6%. The authors suggest implementing "Scaffolded Cognitive Friction" to help maintain human cognitive control, criticizing current designs for undermining our mental capabilities by being too seamless.
