Research on independent cultural spaces in Milan published by cheFare
The association cheFare, under the scientific direction of Bertram Niessen, conducted a year-long research project titled 'LaGuida nel Contemporaneo' throughout 2021, investigating the state of independent cultural organizations, non-profit spaces, associations, and project spaces in Milan. The study, supported by Fondazione Cariplo and Fondazione Unipolis, aims to understand the current situation, strengths, critical issues, and new challenges facing these entities. It highlights that the pandemic has exacerbated inequalities and marginalization, and argues that cultural participation is a fundamental democratic factor for full citizenship. The guide emphasizes the role of independent spaces as promoters of culture and local economy, but notes difficulties such as high real estate prices, distance from academies and public administration, and bureaucratic hurdles. Proposals include revising public call criteria and providing more tools for operators. The research concludes that collaboration between recognized institutions and the broader independent scene is more necessary than ever, especially in light of the proximity city and the rethinking of museums and libraries.
