architecture-design · 2026-04-26

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop, has opened in Athens on the site of the former hippodrome in the Kallithea district. The €596 million project, fully funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, spans 23 hectares near the sea. It houses the Greek National Opera (33,000 sqm, 1,400-seat main theater, 400-seat experimental theater) and the National Library of Greece (24,000 sqm, 750,000 volumes). The building features an "Energy Canopy" with 5,560 photovoltaic panels generating 2,280 kWh/year, enabling near-independent operation. The canopy weighs 3,500 tonnes on 30 steel columns and includes shock absorbers for thermal expansion, wind, and seismic activity. The center achieved LEED Platinum certification. A public space called "Agorà" uses local Dionysos marble. During the four-day opening through June 26, 2016, the Metamorphosis program offers free guided tours and performances.
