Renzo Piano retrospective at Royal Academy of Arts, London

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The Royal Academy of Arts in London has launched 'Renzo Piano: The Art of Making Buildings', marking the architect's first significant retrospective since 1989, which will be on display until 20 January 2019. Curated by Kate Goodwin alongside the Renzo Piano Building Workshop and Fondazione Piano, the exhibition showcases 16 projects, such as the Centre Pompidou (Paris, 1977) and the Shard (London, 2012). It includes original drawings, models, and a central area featuring photographs by Gianni Berengo Gardin and a film by Thomas Riedelsheimer. The exhibition honors structural engineer Peter Rice (d. 1992). During the opening, Piano acknowledged Sir David Chipperfield's renovation and commented on the Genoa bridge collapse. A 160-page catalogue includes contributions from Richard Rogers and Roberto Benigni.
