Renzo Piano and Alvisi Kirimoto Redesign Rai News 24 Studios

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

Renzo Piano and Alvisi Kirimoto have redesigned the television studios of Rai News 24 at the Saxa Rubra headquarters in Rome, inaugurated on September 24, 2022. The project, led by Junko Kirimoto (design leader), Massimo Alvisi (design manager), and Elena Scorrano (architect), reimagines the 226-square-meter space as a dynamic and flexible environment that reveals the behind-the-scenes work of the newsroom. A key feature is a mirrored wall behind the main desk, reflecting the hidden production area, which can be covered by a 16:9 LED wall on a motorized track. The studio is enclosed in a clean-lined wooden box with sliding LED walls and a modular desk composed of three sections on wheels, allowing reconfiguration for different programs. The design aims to translate the rapid evolution of multimedia into architecture, showcasing the constant creative activity beyond the camera.
