Renovated Belgian artist's home blends De Stijl, Bauhaus, and midcentury style
Atelier Vens Vanbelle has renovated Painter's House, the former home and studio of late painter Antoon De Clerck in Aalter, Belgium, between Bruges and Ghent. The architects Maarten Vanbelle and Dries Vens drew inspiration from De Clerck's use of primary colors, abstraction, and midcentury style, as well as the De Stijl movement and Bauhaus. The 258 sq m house now features five bedrooms and two bathrooms, with a fully reimagined ground floor including a dressing room, laundry hall, and office. Contemporary touches like metallic roof detailing and a white brick fireplace update the modernist aesthetic. The project was photographed by Tim Van de Velde, who also looked to Richard Neutra's Kaufman Desert House, Slim Aarons' 'Poolside Gossip', and David Hockney's 'A Bigger Splash' for inspiration.
