artist · 2026-04-27

René Gruau, born Renato Zavagli Ricciardelli delle Caminate in Rimini in 1909, was a celebrated fashion illustrator of the 20th century. He created the poster for Federico Fellini's 'La Dolce Vita' in 1960. After his parents separated, he moved between Rimini, Milan, Monte Carlo, and Paris. In 1920, he studied under painter Gino Ravaioli. By 1923, he was working for Lidel magazine. In the 1930s, he moved to Paris, contributing to Marianne, Le Figaro, and others. His breakthrough came in 1937 with Fémina magazine. Major fashion houses like Patou, Lanvin, Lelong, Worth, Piguet, Rochas, Schiaparelli, and Balenciaga sought his illustrations. After WWII, he collaborated with Christian Dior, designing the Miss Dior perfume bottle in 1947. He also worked for Italian brands Fratelli Rossetti, Bassetti, and Laura Biagiotti, for whom he designed the logo. His style combined precision with Japanese minimalism. In 1999, a major retrospective 'René Gruau, l’Art de la Publicité' was held at the Musée de la Publicité in Paris. He died in Rome in 2004.
