René Caussanel's Monumental Gouaches at Maison des arts Georges Pompidou

exhibition · 2026-04-23

From April 4 to June 6, 2010, the Maison des arts Georges Pompidou in Cajarc presented an exhibition of works by painter René Caussanel, featuring eleven of his sixty-five monumental gouaches on paper, each averaging ten square meters, created in 2008–2009 under the series "Vues d'alors." The show also included a cabinet of drawings titled "Dictées," where frames are tightly packed in series. Caussanel's drawings reference famous painters such as Füssli, Courbet, Vermeer, and Lucian Freud, and are compared to the work of Pierre Buraglio. The gouaches, made on an assembly of thirty-two sheets of raisin-format paper laid edge to edge, are painted directly on the studio floor with a broad brush (spalter), then finished individually on a table. The compositions feature figures, flowers, animal figurines, skulls, cups, and recognizable references to Van Eyck's Arnolfini Portrait and Carpaccio's Saint George and the Dragon. The exhibition was curated by Benoît Decron. A follow-up exhibition will take place from October 2 to December 31 at Galerie Éric Linard in Le Val des Nymphes, La Garde-Adhémar.
