Rencontres d'Arles 2022: Women and Ecology Take Center Stage
The 53rd edition of the Rencontres d'Arles photography festival, curated by Christoph Wiesner, runs until September 25, 2022. The festival highlights women photographers and environmental themes. A major exhibition at Mécanique Générale, 'An Avant-Garde Feminist,' features 250 photographs from the Verbund Collection (Vienna) by 71 women artists from the 1970s, exploring themes of confinement, sexuality, and beauty standards. Artists include Gabriele Stötzer, Suzanne Santoro, Annegret Soltau, Valie Export, Birgit Jürgenssen, Katalin Ladik, Ana Mendieta, Francesca Woodman, ORLAN, and Cindy Sherman. Other women-focused shows include Susan Meiselas at Saint-Blaise church, Babette Mangolte (recent Women in Motion prize winner) at Saint-Anne church, and Lee Miller at Espace Van Gogh. The environmental thread features Noémie Goudal at Église des Trinitaires, Léa Habourdin's anthotypes, Ritual Inhabitual's 'Geometric Forests' on Mapuche struggles, Seif Kousmate's desertification series at the Découverte Louis Roederer prize, Bruno Serralongue's work with Sioux in Dakota, and 'Songs of the Sky' at Monoprix. At Musée Réattu, Jacqueline Salmon presents 230 prints examining the perizonium in Christian art.
