Renato Fascetti resurfaces with retrospective at Sala 1

exhibition · 2026-04-27

A retrospective at Sala 1 in Rome, curated by Mary Angela Schroth and Michela Zimotti, recovers the work of painter Renato Fascetti (1936–2018) as part of the cycle "Riquadrare la storia." Fascetti studied at the Istituto Comunale d'Arte in Rome in the 1950s, exhibited at Galleria Numero in Florence in 1962, and was noted in a Ministry of Education show at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Roma. He lived in Norway from 1963 to 1966, befriending futurist Ivo Pannaggi, and held a solo show at Galleria L'Obelisco in 1967. In 1968 he published a poetic statement in Art International, describing the painting as "an organism that articulates its forms in temporal sequence through paths originating from within." His technique of layered reliefs, termed "rilievi stratificati" by Enrico Crispolti, evokes spatial concerns akin to Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni, and Agostino Bonalumi. In 2012 he published a memoir about poet Emilio Villa. The exhibition, realized with his son Andrea, ends decades of obscurity.
