Renaissance Terracotta Sculpture Show in Padua
At the Museo Diocesano di Padova, the exhibition 'A nostra immagine. Scultura del Rinascimento da Donatello a Riccio' runs until June 2. It focuses on terracotta sculpture from the second half of the 15th century, a period shaped by Donatello's decade-long stay in Padua starting in 1443-44. The show traces the development of a classicizing language culminating in Andrea Riccio. Twenty-two works by Bartolomeo Bellano, Giovanni de Fondulis, and others are arranged chronologically across three themes: Madonna and Child, Saints, and Pietà/Lamentations. Curators Andrea Nante and Carlo Cavalli map Veneto workshops, clarifying attributions and highlighting lesser-known artists. Restored pieces from the 'Mi sta a cuore' crowdfunding project are featured, including de Fondulis's Madonna from Pozzonovo and works by the 'Plasticatore padovano'. New attributions include a Madonna from the Bargello Museum now assigned to Pietro Lombardo (by Francesco Caglioti), a Pozzonovo Madonna reattributed to Giovanni de Fondulis (by Davide Civettini), and a Pietà from Pozzolo di Camponogara also given to de Fondulis (by Marco Scansani). The catalog by Scripta Edizioni includes essays, detailed entries, and a photographic atlas by Mauro and Marco Furio Magliani.
