Rembrandt Year 2019: Major Exhibitions Across Dutch Museums

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The Netherlands marks the 350th anniversary of Rembrandt's death with a series of exhibitions in 2019. The Mauritshuis in The Hague presents 'Rembrandt and the Mauritshuis,' showcasing all eighteen paintings acquired as Rembrandt, including 'The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp,' 'Saul and David,' and the 1669 self-portrait. Eleven are still attributed to Rembrandt; five are no longer considered his work, and two remain uncertain. These two will undergo study and restoration using advanced techniques. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam hosts 'All the Rembrandts,' displaying its entire collection of twenty-two paintings, three hundred etchings, and sixty drawings for the first time. Director Taco Dibbits emphasizes Rembrandt's autobiographical nature and his focus on human truth over beauty. The Museum Het Rembrandthuis in Amsterdam presents 'Rembrandt's Social Network' and 'Inspired by Rembrandt – 100 Years of Collecting.' Museum De Lakenhal in Leiden features 'Young Rembrandt.' The initiative 'Rembrandt and the Golden Age 2019' is led by NBTC Holland Marketing with five participating museums.
