Rembrandt's Pivotal Year 1632 Explored in Kassel-Gotha Exhibition

The exhibition 'Rembrandt 1632' at Schloss Wilhelmshöhe in Kassel, running until August 9 before moving to the Herzogliches Museum in Gotha, examines the artist's breakthrough year. In 1632, Rembrandt painted 32 works—roughly a tenth of his entire oeuvre—and moved from Leiden to Amsterdam, establishing himself as a marketable 'brand.' Curated by Justus Lange of the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister and Timo Trümper of the Friedenstein-Stiftung, the show features around 50 autograph works plus copies, studio pieces, and works by contemporaries like Jan Lievens, Frans Hals, and Gerrit Dou. Loans come from 14 German museums and international institutions including Vienna, Zürich, Amsterdam, The Hague, London, Milan, Stockholm, and the Tiroler Landesmuseum Innsbruck. The exhibition highlights Rembrandt's evolving signature—from 'RH van Rijn' to 'Rembrant f.' to 'Rembrandt'—placed prominently in compositions, and his strategic self-portraits. A key loan is a KI-animated video version of 'The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp' from the Mauritshuis. The collection's foundation was laid by Landgrave Wilhelm VIII of Hessen-Kassel, who acquired dozens of Rembrandts in the 18th century, leveraging the Dutch economic downturn. Today, the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister holds the third-largest Rembrandt collection after Amsterdam and Berlin, including masterpieces like 'Jacob Blessing the Sons of Joseph.'
