Reina Sofía Revisits Spanish Transition Through 1976 Venice Biennale

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid is hosting 'Poetiche della democrazia. Immagini e contro-immagini della Transizione' to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Spain's Constitution from 1978. This exhibition showcases 250 pieces from the 1970s, covering the period from Franco's passing in November 1975 to the democratic transition. It opens with the 1976 Venice Biennale, led by Carlo Ripa di Meana, which highlighted anti-Francoist Spanish art. Curated by ten Spanish intellectuals, the exhibit features works that were displayed in the central pavilion due to the national pavilion's closure. The event will be on view until November 25, 2019, and reconstructs the Biennale's politically significant display, enhanced by period photographs and collaboration with the Archivio Storico delle arti contemporanee.
