Reina Sofía and Casanova challenge HIV stigma in Spanish art

exhibition · 2026-05-11

The Museo Reina Sofía has integrated activist art about HIV/AIDS into its collection, including works by Pepe Miralles, thirty years after his initial proposal. Eduardo Casanova's film 'Sidosa', produced by Jordi Évole, had a brief theatrical run. Researcher Aimar Arriola notes that the moment to discuss HIV always seems imminent but never fully arrives. On December 1, 1992, artist Pepe Espaliú, then ill with AIDS, was carried by a hundred people from the Congress of Deputies to the Reina Sofía, passing the Ministry of Health, in a performance that was repeated. Casanova's works 'Silencio' and 'Sidosa' aim to break the stigma once and for all.
