Reiko Sudō Creates Chrome Textile Curtains for LACMA's David Geffen Galleries
Reiko Sudō, a textile designer from Tokyo, has crafted custom sputter-plated chrome curtains for the David Geffen Galleries at LACMA, tackling the issue of shielding light-sensitive artworks while maintaining the building's expansive glass windows. After a stainless steel fabric did not meet fire retardant standards, Sudō speculated that chrome, being non-flammable, would succeed. The resulting LACMA × NUNO Sputtered Chrome textiles, available in both matte and gloss finishes, are transparent with a metallic luster, offering an impressionistic glimpse of the surroundings. When layered, they produce a moiré effect that reflects the hues of the concrete walls. These curtains are now in place and will feature in Sudō's retrospective, Textile Alchemy: The Art of Reiko Sudō and NUNO, set to open at LACMA on September 20, 2026.
