Rehana Zaman Wins 2023 Jarman Award with £10,000 Prize
Rehana Zaman is the recipient of the 2023 Jarman Award, which includes a cash prize of £10,000. A committee that featured Matthew Barrington from the Barbican, Shaminder Nahal of Channel 4, artist Michelle Williams Gamaker, and Lila Rawlings from Esperanto Filmoj made the selection. Williams Gamaker highlighted Zaman’s unique storytelling style and her focus on social justice, showcasing resilience within communities facing challenges. Since its inception in 2008, this award, created in partnership with the Whitechapel Gallery and Barbican, recognizes contemporary filmmakers. Zaman was selected from nominees like Ayo Akingbade and Andrew Black. The shortlisted works will be displayed at the Whitechapel Gallery on November 25 and 26. Previous winners include Grace Ndiritu in 2022 and Jasmina Cibic in 2021.
