Regine Schumann's Fluorescent Plexiglass Works at Dep Art Gallery
Regine Schumann (Goslar, Germany, 1961) presents her third solo exhibition at Dep Art Gallery in Milan, titled 'Iris', curated by Alberto Mattia Martini. The show runs until July 6, 2024, featuring 20 works that survey her production from early pieces to the recent 'Corners' series. Schumann's practice explores color, light, and their expressive potential through fluorescent plexiglass, a material she has used for about 25 years. The title 'Iris' references the Greek goddess of the rainbow and the iris of the eye, symbolizing the connection between the viewer and the artwork. Her works interact with natural, artificial, and blacklight, creating shifting colors and shadows. The 'Corners' series emerged from a damaged piece during transport, turning an accident into a new direction. Schumann studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig under painter Roland Dörfler and won a scholarship to Italy in 1990, where she deepened her engagement with color and light. Her method involves designing forms, dimensions, and finishes, often working remotely to plan exhibitions. Upcoming projects include a solo show in Knokke, Belgium (late April), a project in Turkey between Istanbul and Bodrum, and exhibitions in Madrid and Japan (Tokyo and Kyoto) in autumn with Rafael Perez Hernando and Taguchi Fine Art, plus a solo show at Kyoto Art Collaboration fair.
