Reggio Calabria Archaeological Museum Reopens After Six-Year Renovation
After six years and over thirty million euros, the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Reggio Calabria reopens on April 30, 2016. Director Carmelo Malacrino announced the reopening of all four permanent exhibition floors of Palazzo Piacentini, except the terrace. The museum now features 230 display cases, a newly restored three-by-five-meter mosaic depicting a gymnasium scene, and a lapidary section. For the first time, the public can access the Hellenistic tomb area in the basement, discovered in 1932. The Piazza Paolo Orsi has been completely renovated, housing the ticket office and bookshop. Two rooms are dedicated to temporary exhibitions. A new dynamic communication plan and logo have been introduced. Culture Minister Dario Franceschini will attend the morning inauguration ceremony, with doors opening to visitors in the afternoon. Malacrino described the event as a celebration for the city and the entire region, highlighting collaboration with local associations and the FAI's school-work program involving young volunteers.
