Reggia di Caserta Breaks Ground on New Cultural Hub in Former Monastery

architecture-design · 2026-04-26

The Reggia di Caserta and Italy's Ministry of Culture have commenced work on a new cultural hub dedicated to creativity, fashion, and design, located in the former convent of the Passionist Fathers within the Vanvitellian complex. The project, named 'Reggia in arte e design,' involves the restoration and adaptive reuse of the convent buildings and outdoor areas, emphasizing experimentation, sustainability, and circular economy. The spaces are slated to open in 2026 and will serve society by promoting local excellence while hosting external initiatives. Tiziana Maffei, general director of the Reggia di Caserta, stated that the hub will expand the visitor experience by opening the Royal Park from via Passionisti in Casagiove, reclaiming degraded areas and making little-known paths accessible to the public. The design was informed by a thorough survey and diagnostic campaign to preserve the architectural complex's historical layers. The hub will feature multifunctional creative ateliers and labs, services including a guesthouse, and spaces for festivals, presentations, concerts, and performances. A second phase of works in the Royal Palace will connect the Hercules Farnese corridor to the Court Theatre, enabling the exhibition and sale of items created within the Passionist complex, thereby fostering local economic regeneration.
