Reframing the Prado: A modular frame restores Velázquez's original composition

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

The Museo del Prado in Madrid has unveiled an innovative modular frame for Diego Velázquez's 'Las Hilanderas' (The Fable of Arachne), painted in 1657. The work had been altered in the 18th century with canvas additions—about 50 cm at the top and narrower strips on other sides—that shifted focus away from its mythological core. Conservators developed a thin wall-like device that covers these additions without invasive intervention, restoring the original composition. The project, called Reframing the Prado, is supported by American Friends of the Prado Museum and sponsored by the Fondazione American Express. This system integrates aesthetic and conservation criteria and could serve as a model for similar cases. The museum has been working on this solution for years.
