Refik Anadol's Dataland AI Art Museum Opens June 20 in Los Angeles

Dataland, the world's first AI art museum, will open on June 20 in Los Angeles after over two and a half years of planning. Founded by artist Refik Anadol and his partner Efsun Erkiliç, the museum is located inside the Grand L.A., a Frank Gehry-designed complex with apartments, entertainment, and a luxury hotel. Its debut show, "Machine Dreams: Rainforest," simulates rainforests using ecological data processed into digital sculptures. The museum spans 35,000 square feet, designed by Gensler, with nearly a third of the space dedicated to hardware. It uses Anadol's Large Nature Model (LNM), an open-source AI trained on data from the Smithsonian, London's Natural History Museum, and Cornell Lab of Ornithology. LNM runs on 87% carbon-free energy in Oregon, and a visitor's stay uses as much energy as charging a smartphone. Anadol, who moved to LA in 2012 to study at UCLA, founded his studio with Erkiliç in 2014. Dataland joins LA's cultural corridor including MOCA, the Broad, and Walt Disney Concert Hall.
