Refik Anadol's AI Art Reimagines MoMA's Collection at New York Exhibition
At the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, Turkish artist Refik Anadol (born 1985, Istanbul) presents "Unsupervised," a site-specific AI installation in the Gund Lobby. A 10x10-meter screen displays three digital works that use artificial intelligence to reinterpret 200 years of art from MoMA's permanent collection. The AI model, trained on publicly available visual data from the collection, generates new images in real time, exploring dreams, hallucinations, and irrationality rather than realistic representations. Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator of Architecture and Design and Director of Research and Development at MoMA, stated that the museum supports artists experimenting with new technologies to expand their vocabulary and help society understand change. Anadol's practice treats data as raw material for computerized minds, creating radical visualizations that merge physical and decentralized networks. In 2021, he released the works as NFTs during a live online auction on the Feral File platform, where they remain publicly accessible. The exhibition runs until April 15, 2023, at MoMA, 11 West 53 Street.
