Refik Anadol's AI 'Archive Dreaming' Opens Oxford's Schwarzman Centre

exhibition · 2026-04-24

On Saturday, visitors will experience Refik Anadol's captivating AI installation, 'Archive Dreaming,' during the public inauguration of the Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities at Oxford University. This impressive piece features a 12-foot-tall, 40-foot-wide curved LED display that showcases dynamic digital shapes in vibrant shades of orange, red, and yellow, created from nearly 68,000 botanical images sourced from Oxford's Bodleian Libraries. Anadol's team utilized a diffusion model based on the university's Herbaria collection, which dates back to the mid-17th century. A Turkish-American media artist, Anadol is among the first visiting artistic fellows at the Schwarzman Centre, which opened to scholars in October and includes Oxford's Institute for Ethics in AI, established in 2021. Other fellows comprise Rhiannon Giddens, Sir Wayne McGregor, Hans Ulrich Obrist, and Es Devlin. Additionally, Anadol co-founded Dataland, the inaugural museum for AI art, set to launch this spring at the Grand LA, designed by Frank Gehry.
