Rediscovering Emilio Sobrero: The Forgotten Italian Painter
Emilio Sobrero (Turin, 1890–Rome, 1964), an Italian artist, has recently gained attention after years of being overlooked. He was praised by notable figures such as Lionello Venturi and Mario Soldati, and counted Carlo Carrà and Felice Casorati among his friends, but his influence diminished after World War II. Sobrero studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Turin and began exhibiting by 1915. In the 1920s, he became a member of the Società di Belle Arti 'Antonio Fontanesi,' showcasing his work in Italy and internationally, including 'Vedute di Torino' (1926) and 'Artistes italiens contemporains' (1927) in Geneva. He made his Venice Biennale debut in 1928. After relocating to Paris in 1931, he returned to Rome to create a fresco for the Triennale in 1933. He passed away on July 20, 1964, and his artwork is now accessible online.
