Rediscovering Carlo Bononi: Baroque Master from Ferrara
A major exhibition at Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara reintroduces Carlo Bononi (1569–1632), a Baroque painter largely forgotten despite his fame during his lifetime. Bononi's work, found in churches across Ferrara and the Bassa Padana, stands out for its human-centered approach, warm palette, and strong chiaroscuro, influenced by his teacher Bastarolo (Giuseppe Mazzuoli) and Venetian masters Tintoretto and Palma il Giovane. A stay in Rome between 1617 and 1619 exposed him to Caravaggio's naturalism, but Bononi's figures lack Caravaggio's ambiguous sensuality, instead echoing Correggio's tenderness and soft chiaroscuro. His secular work, such as "Genio delle Arti" (1620), reflects this Roman influence. The exhibition contextualizes Bononi alongside contemporaries Ludovico Carracci, Guido Reni, and Scarsellino. Bononi navigated Counter-Reformation demands by adhering to the principles of "docere, delectare et movere" (teach, delight, move) while avoiding the academicism of Carlo Dolci and the martyrdom excesses of Caravaggio. His art, marked by variety and vitality, is seen as a precursor to Giambattista Tiepolo's vibrancy. The show is curated by Niccolò Lucarelli.
