Redhill Early Learning Centre by Hubo Studio Opens in Johannesburg
Hubo Studio has completed the Redhill Early Learning Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2024. The 2,641 m² kindergarten reimagines the school as a child-scale city, reflecting Johannesburg's energy while adapting to children's sensory and developmental needs. The design process began in Reggio Emilia, Italy, where the firm studied the origins of the Reggio Emilia educational philosophy. Its constructivist, child-centered principles inspired a distinctly South African interpretation where architecture becomes an active participant in learning. Key team members include principal architects Asher Marcus and Michelle Smith, with educational collaboration from Redhill School, Joseph Gerassi, and Sue Pilkington-Williams. Mosaic artist Usha Seejarim contributed to the project. Suppliers include MOSO BAMBOO, Tarkett, Bella Bathrooms, Northern Wholesale Tiles, and Serge Ferrari Group. Photography by Elsa Young and Iwan Baan.
