Red Bull Arts Detroit Hosts Iterative Exhibition on Disability, Care, and Temporal Politics

Red Bull Arts Detroit presented the exhibition 'Sick Time, Sleepy Time, Crip Time: Against Capitalism's Temporal Bullying' from September 18 to November 3, 2019. Curated by Taraneh Fazeli, this fourth iteration of a traveling show featured works exploring themes of illness, accessibility, and racialized sleep disparities. Fannie Sosa and Navild Acosta's installation 'Black Power Naps: Black Bean Bed and Altar to the Ancestors' addressed sleep debt among different populations, with a zine available only to persons of color. Carolyn Lazard's video 'CRIP TIME' showed medication sorting, while Jen Liu's 'Pink Slime Caesar Shift' connected labor and genetic messaging. Park McArthur and Constantina Zavitsanos contributed sculptural grab-bars with instructions, and Jordan Lord's film examined caretaking through medical imaging. A 'Waiting Room' installation hosted commissions including Wayne Curtis's coloring book and Cassie Thornton's credit workshop. Fazeli collaborated with Detroit Disability Power to implement permanent accessibility improvements, funded through the curatorial budget. Several artists belong to Canaries, a collective of chronically ill and autoimmune artists. The exhibition's online documentation featured descriptive captioning, and Fazeli's residency extended programming into community spaces through spring 2020.
