Recovered Etruscan artifacts on display at Centrale Montemartini in Rome
The exhibition 'I colori degli Etruschi' at Rome's Centrale Montemartini showcases Etruscan painted terracotta slabs recovered by the Carabinieri Nucleo Tutela Patrimonio Culturale in Geneva in 2016, alongside repatriated artifacts from the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen and other international museums. The show marks the 50th anniversary of the Carabinieri command (founded 1969) and highlights the MiBACT's cultural diplomacy agreement with the Danish museum. Dating from the 6th to 5th century BCE, the slabs feature natural pigments and were scientifically authenticated by the Soprintendenza Archeologica (SABAP), with provenance now attributed to ancient Ceri in the province of Rome. The exhibition, originally opened in July 2019 at Castello di Santa Severa and later interrupted by the pandemic, reopened on June 2, 2020. Among the repatriated pieces are a lekythos from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (c. 490 BCE) depicting Heracles and Iolaus fighting Stymphalian birds, and an Attic amphora (530-510 BCE) from the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, showing Gorgons and Medusa. Also included are vases from the Castellani Collection of the Musei Capitolini, normally not on public display. The exhibition runs until November 1, 2020.
