Reconstructing Broodthaers' Film Works at Fundació Tàpies
In 1997, the Fundació Antoni Tàpies in Barcelona staged a reconstruction of Marcel Broodthaers' cinematic oeuvre, curated by Manuel J. Borja-Villel, Michael Compton, and Maria Gilisen. Broodthaers, who founded the Musée d'Art Moderne, Département des Aigles in 1968 and added a film section in 1971, argued that film projections should occur in the exhibition space, not an ancillary room, equating the cinema screen with the painter's canvas. The exhibition reconstructed his film works, treating them as integral to his artistic practice.
